ROMI is a proposed web application that people with type 2 diabetes will be able to talk or text about their condition using their phone, tablet, or pc. ROMI would then send personalised advice - either verbally, as a text or as a graphic - to the patient. We are currently co-designing ROMI with people with type 2 diabetes and health care professionals. The team behind ROMI is made up of researchers from the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) and the NIHR Bristol Biomedical Research Centre (NIHR Bristol BRC), and Elzware Ltd, a technology company that has been developing conversational AI since 2002. This one-year co-design process is funded by the National Institute of Health and Care Research (Award page).




THE TEAM
  • The grant's Principal Investigator is Phil D. Hall who is also leading the technical team in leading edge Hybrid AI architecture definition.
  • The Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) team is led by Professor Andy Gibson of the University of the West of England, a recognised national leader in the development of PPI methods.
  • Dr Mari-Rose Kennedy will organise the PPI events.
  • Dr Elanor Hinton is project manager, drawing upon over 16 years of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Our diet advisor is Dr Duane Mellor, a double award-winning registered dietitian and science communicator at Aston University Medical School.
  • Dr Faisal Hasan is a consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Southmead hospital. He will advise on clinical best practice.
  • Dr Michelle Griffiths will act as Research Associate, developing the theoretical basis of our approach.
  • Project Director working from the perspective of Elzu Ltd is Rik Lander, an expert in creating participatory media. He is a member of the Digital Cultures Research Centre.
